We've all been cold at some point. Chilled to the bone, where you feel like it will take you days to get warm again. Sometimes our animals come from environments like that. Wandering the streets in the winter... or forced to live outside in a pen.
Those who find their way to us, get to experience the comfort of a warm building with full meals every day. They get to sleep on clean, fresh blankets in a nice 70-degree room, knowing that someone will be there the very next morning to give them head scratches & treats. And that 70 degrees, especially in the bitter cold southern Indiana winter, can feel like a lifeline when it's below freezing outside!
The Vanderburgh Humane Society facility opened over 21 years ago... which means almost all our fixtures & equipment are that old, too! We have 2 boilers that provide heat & hot water to our building. At 22+ years old, these are quickly showing their age and starting to need repairs more & more often. It's time for us to replace these boilers before they fail, to ensure uninterrupted heat for the animals during the coldest months of the year!
We're hoping to raise $20,000 toward the boiler repair project, which will cost $110,000 total. We've already received $42,500 towards the project from the West Side Nut Club and City of Evansville Endowment Fund. You can help us surpass the halfway point so we can replace our boilers in 2026!
