We do lifesaving work here at the Vanderburgh Humane Society. And while we do have more than 200 active volunteers, we have a team of more than 40 staff members who are at the core of what we do. Our employees are compassionate, hardworking, and desire to make a difference for animals (and the people who love them!) in our region through our shelter Operations, Spay & Neuter Clinic, River Kitty Cat Cafe, and more.

  • Animal Care Technician (Full-Time)

    The Vanderburgh Humane Society is seeking dependable, hardworking animal lovers who can join our team as Animal Care Technicians. This position involves daily interaction with homeless animals who are often experiencing the most stressful time in their lives. Our Animal Care Techs are their primary source of the reassurance, love, and interaction they need to make their stay with us as comfortable as possible.

    Job Description:

    • Hands-on animal care & kennel/cage cleaning (including scooping feces and cleaning up other bodily fluids like urine & mucous)
    • Repetitive bending
    • Scrubbing
    • Daily exposure to corrosive cleaning and disinfecting agents (protective wear provided)
    • Daily time spent outdoors with dogs for up to 2 hours at a time in all weather conditions 365 days a year including excessive heat, cold, snow, and ice
    • Exposure to, and controlled handling of, various species of animals including:
      • Dogs of all sizes, breeds, strengths, and energy levels
      • Cats
      • Rabbits
      • Reptiles
      • Other small & exotic animals including (but not limited to) pocket pets, birds, and potbellied pigs 


    Requirements:

    Schedule:

    • 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, 40 hours weekly
    • 30 minute lunch (unpaid) and two 15-minute breaks (paid)
    • Some holiday half-days required, the animals need care even on Christmas morning!
    • Hours may sometimes vary, MUST be flexible. Saturday and Sunday work days may be required.

  • Digital Marketing Specialist

    The Vanderburgh Humane Society seeks a passionate, dynamic, detail-oriented candidate for the position of Digital Marketing Specialist. This role will be multi-functional primarily onsite at our facility and will have the opportunity to make a meaningful, widespread impact on shelter pets, the people who love them, and our community as a whole. 

    Here at the VHS, just thinking about logging into the Google Ads dashboard makes us nervous. Graphic design? We can throw together a mean Canva post, but that’s the extent of it. And all our internal and external documents look like they were designed by different people! (‘Cause, you know, they were.) That’s why we need YOUR expertise to round out our Advancement team and make big, magical things happen for local animals. 

    Duties:

     ● Managing the design and proofreading of the organization’s entire portfolio of printed materials, both internal and external  

    ● Implementation of VHS  brand palette across all materials 

    ● Graphic design of logos, flyers, donor stewardship materials, and web content as needed 

    ● Design of new promotional merchandise 

    ● Monitoring Google Ad Grants and Google Analytics, providing periodic insight reports 

    ● Managing SEO for VHS and River Kitty Cat Cafe websites 

    ● Extract and decipher social media analytics for Advancement Team 

    Qualifications:

    ● Minimum 2-year degree in graphic design or digital marketing (degree in progress is acceptable with at least 1 year complete) 

    ● Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Canva

    ● Nonprofit social media experience preferred 

    ● 1 year experience in Google Ads and Google Analytics preferred

    ● Efficiency (produce quality work at a fast pace)

    ● Candidates must be detail-oriented and self-motivated

    Work Environment:

    ● Shared office space

    Schedule: Full-time day shift, Tuesday-Saturday

    Location: Primarily onsite with remote flex option available 

    Pay: Begins at $12/hour

  • Full-Time Vet Assistant/Technician

    The VHS is seeking a full time Veterinary Assistant or Registered Veterinary Technician for our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter and Vaccine Clinic! Our Clinic performs more than 8,000 surgeries and wellness services every year for pets all over the community, and we are making a huge impact. Come be part of our team! 

    All applicants: 

    -  Must be able to work Monday-Friday, with a few rotating Saturdays each year 

    -  Must be a dependable, self-motivated individual who maintains a strong initiative to complete duties and doesn’t require a lot of direction from others 

    -  Must be able to learn basic veterinary medical concepts and communicate those concepts 

    - Must have strong customer service skills Must be able to work well individually and as a team player 

    - Must be able to understand and strictly follow instructions 

    - Must possess strong cleaning skills and understand the importance of this in terms of disease transmission 

    - Must be able to humanely handle up to 60 or more animals a day and learn characteristics of animal behavior to ensure a safe environment 

    - Must be able to meet the heavy physical demands of the job including but not limited to standing for 8 or more hours, able to lift and carry 50 pounds multiple times a day, possess good balance and reflexes, and be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations 

    - Must be able to learn how to perform vein punctures to obtain blood samples and insert IV catheters, and administer vaccines, microchips, and medications 

    - Must be able to work under stressful situations efficiently and effectively, and remain calm 

    - Must be able to cope with death due to either surgical complications or euthanasia
