In General
The VHS takes in animals that can no longer be cared for by their owners. All efforts are made to find loving adoptive homes for these animals. Only when those efforts are exhausted, and when space or health issues become apparent do we euthanize surrendered animals.

Evansville Animal Care and Control is a tax funded municipal facility that is responsible for picking up and taking in strays from the city of Evansville and in Vanderburgh County. If you have found a stray, please call 435-6015.  Also, please call the VHS to leave a detailed report.  We keep a lost and found log book that may help reunite the animal you have found with its owner, or reunite you with your lost pet. Please call 426-2563 ext. 0 for this service. The VHS does take in strays when space and other circumstances allow. If you have found a stray animal and would like more information on surrendering it to the VHS, please call our Surrender Department at (812) 426-2563 ext. 501.

Surrender/Continuing Care Fees

The average cost incurred by the Vanderburgh Humane Society to care for an animal during its stay at the shelter is over $200. We ask that each patron assist in deferring the cost associated with caring for the animal they are surrendering. Although ownership and responsibility for the animal is transferred to the VHS, the cost of caring for that animal continues. VHS offers a list of services to animals coming into our shelter. These services include food, shelter, vaccinations, medical care, etc.

Our surrender fee structure is as follows:

  • Cats and Dogs $15 per adult cat or dog over the age of 6 months
  • Single kittens and puppies $15 per kitten or puppy under the age of 6 months
  • Litter of kittens or puppies (under 4 months of age) $15 for the 1st/$5 for each additional ($25 max).
(Mother counts as 1st if surrendered with litter)
  • Litter of kittens or puppies (over 4 months of age) $15 for the 1st/$5 for each additional (No max).
(Mother counts as 1st if surrendered with litter)
  • Small animals/Birds $5 per animal ($25 max)
  • Rabbits/Ferrets/Reptiles $10 per animal ($50 max)
  • Livestock/Pigs/Goats $25 per animal

Please call the shelter for additional domestic animal surrender fees. Any contribution above the minimum Continuing Care Fee is considered a tax-deductible donation.

We hope you will agree that the fee for continuing care is a small price to pay for the animal to be sheltered and protected while we search for a new home.
