Volunteer Opportunities For Kids Under 16

07/31/ by: Cyndi Hoon Donley, Education/Volunteer Coordinator

Thank you for inquiring about volunteer opportunities at the VHS! I appreciate your love of animals and desire to volunteer. Currently all new volunteers must be 16 years old or older to work in the shelter and officially volunteer BUT there are other ways to help out the shelter pets.

Here are some suggestions of ways to make a difference in the VHS animals now:

• Make braided toys for shelter dogs and cats (or just knot if you can't braid)
• Stuff cardboard tubes with Timothy Hay for our rabbits and guinea pigs
• Stuff socks with catnip and a little stuffing for kitty cat toys
• Save empty aluminum cans and bring them to the shelter for recycling
• Help your parents clean the house and donate unwanted items to the shelter (towels, blankets, stuffed animals, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, or office supplies)
• Bake homemade dog biscuits to donate
• Decorate index cards with phrases like, “I’m adopted!”, “Almost adopted”, “I’ll be back soon. I’m at an education program”, “I’ll be back soon. I’m at a media spot” “I’ll be back soon. I’m at a special event”
• Take up a collection of supplies at school, scouts, or church
• Visit our Cat Lounge during adoption hours (Tuesday thru Saturday, noon until close). A parent must be present at all times
• Help train our dogs to sit during adoption hours (Tuesday thru Saturday, noon until close). Bring dog training treats and use our hand signal & verbal command and then reward them with a yummy treat. A parent must be present at all times. Ask staff for a demonstration

A list of needed items is on our website's donation page and instructions for some of our projects are available at the shelter. All donations are greatly appreciated.

I eventually hope to get a summer program for kids under 16 started but I’m currently involved in organizing and training our new adult volunteers. Once I have a strong adult program in place, then I’ll focus on getting a kid’s program started. Thanks for being a lifesaver!
