VHS Pit Stop Program

08/19/ by: Miranda Knight, PR Coordinator

The Vanderburgh Humane Society is very excited to announce the launch of a great new program to help the Pit Bulls of our community! Through "Pit Stop", the VHS will be spaying and neutering Pit Bulls in Vanderburgh County for free (see below for program qualifications)! The VHS and Evansville Animal Care & Control are flooded with these dogs, with this breed making up a very high percentage of the population at each facility yearly. Of everything we hear about this misunderstood breed, one thing is most certainly true - while Pit Bulls can make wonderful pets, far too many are euthanized because there are far too many in this community.

The VHS will be collaborating with Evansville Animal Control to target areas of our community that have high populations of Pit Bulls. Our staff and volunteers will be passing out door hangers and cards to promote this service. By reducing the number of Pit Bulls born, we can reduce the number of Pits dying in shelters in our own community.

If you know someone who needs to take advantage of this service, please have them contact the VHS at (812) 426-2563.

The following rules apply to this offer:

• Dog must be a Pit Bull or a predominately Pit Bull mix to qualify. The VHS exclusively reserves the right to decide if a mixed breed dog qualifies. Dogs determined not to be Pit Bulls will be subject to our regular affordable prices.

• Dog must be owned by an individual - no rescue groups, foster organizations, shelter animals or strays will be allowed to participate.

• Owner must live in Vanderburgh County.

• Owner must make an appointment by calling the VHS Spay/Neuter Clinic at 426-2563 Ext 216 Monday thru Friday from 9AM – 3 PM. Dogs without appointments will NOT be accepted – no exceptions.

• Dog must be up to date on Rabies and proof will be required at time of drop off. If dog is NOT up to date or proof is not provided, a Rabies vaccination will be administered at the owner’s expense of $10.00.

• Program covers the cost of surgery only; any additional services selected must be paid by the owner when the animal is picked up. Cash, Debit or Credit Cards are the only accepted payment.

• Funding for this program is limited and subject to cancellation by the VHS without notice.

While funding is secured to alter 250 dogs, the continuation of Pit Stop will depend largely on available funding after altering the initial 250. If you would like to make a donation to this program, please indicate Pit Stop on your check or online.
