Cardio for Canines

Fill out a Cardio for Canines behavior report to help your running buddy find the perfect adopter

Cardio for Canines is an exercise & enrichment program launched in June 2016. It’s designed to provide exercise to people in the community and homeless shelter dogs at the same time! As of 2019 there are more than 900 registered participants!

On Saturday mornings, the public can take any of our available shelter dogs to Garvin Park for a walk or run beginning at 8:00 am CST. Participants must be at least 18+ to actually control the leash, but children and strollers are welcome to tag along!

VHS shelter dogs get to play twice every day during their time with us, but it’s still not enough; they spend nearly 23 hours a day in their kennels. They all look forward to Saturday mornings at the park! It provides them with enrichment, socialization with new people & dogs, companionship, and much-needed exercise. This makes them healthier, happier, and more adoptable overall!

To participate in Cardio for Canines, simply show up at the Vanderburgh Humane Society’s rear lobby at 8:00 a.m. CST on any Saturday morning. (Call ahead or find CFC on Facebook for holiday weekends or during inclement winter weather.) A short registration form and photo ID is required for your first visit only. You’ll be matched with a shelter dog that fits your energy level, and off you go to Garvin Park until 9:30 a.m.! The rear entrance to Garvin Park is just a few hundred yards from our shelter.

Most of the time, with the exception of extreme winter weather, Cardio for Canines happens rain or shine all year long. The dogs still need time outside regardless of weather!
